Reading Means Business on Climate Change, 12th January 2012
Posted January 31st, 2012 by TRC
Reading Means Business on Climate Change was attended by well over 100 delegates from all sectors of society and began with thought-provoking presentations from guest presenterss. Peter Harper Head of Research and Innovation at the Centre for Alternative Technology and co-author of Zero Carbon Britain presented a workable solution for Britain which while radical, was extremely refreshing after the doom and gloom messages about climate change which have become the norm.
Climate Change was described as ‘the Elephant in the room’ which businesses, public sector and community alike are failing to face up to. Those who participated gave generously of their time and enthusiasm to help shape actions that will work towards making Reading a low carbon community.
Dennis Moynihan from the Institute for Sustainability emphasised the need for a holistic approach with all the key players working together and gave real examples from their work in East London. So often, he said, people expected us to reach a point about 10 years from now when ‘the magic just happens’ but his challenge to the delegates was to make the magic happen themselves.
The Reading Green Business Network will be hosting the forums which develop from the workshop discussions at the event so that the resulting climate change strategy is workable and a reflection of what Reading public, private sector and community are prepared to do. Your commitment is valuable and we hope you will engage in the debate when the forums go live over the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, the presentations from Peter, Dennis and Reading Climate Change Partnership can be downloaded below.
